Calgary is an amazing city located in the foothills of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains. It was named by Col. James Macleod of the North West Mounted Police and means ‘clean running water’ in Gaelic. It is the fifth largest city in Canada and the largest city in Alberta.
Calgary has many museums, parks, farmer markets and is known for its tower standing over 525 feet. During the 1988 Winter Olympics, the torch burned on top of this tower. Now this tower is also known as the ‘Worlds Largest Olympic Torch’. Since the city hosted the Winter Olympics in 1988, the population has increased by over 300,000!
Calgary has many industries, reflecting the dominant oil and gas industry, as well as being an agriculture and tourism center.
Calgary is home of the world famous Calgary Stampede; Spruce Meadows, which hosts world class equestrian event; the Calgary Flames of the NHL; the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL; the Calgary Zoo, one of Canada's best; and a wide vareity of locations and activities to satisfy the interests of everyone.
